ABA Lingo Cheat Sheet
Applied Behavior Analysis is the application of the science of behavior to make meaningful changes in a learner's life.  ABA treatment is overseen by a BCBA who will work with the learner and their familiy to identify and target behavior changes that are relevant to that learner and family.
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst is an ABA clinician who has been certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to provide behavior analytic services. In order to become certified, the following are the primary criteria that must be met:
  • Obtain a master's degree or a graduate degree from an approved behavior analysis program that covers required behavior-analytic coursework
  • Complete a specific number of fieldwork hours under the supervision of a qualified BCBA
  • Pass the BCBA exam
A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a certified paraprofessional who delivers ABA services under the supervision of a BCBA.
The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) is the governing board for behavior analysts. The BACB is responsible for certifying BCBA/BCaBA/RBT applicants, and setting and maintaining professional and ethical guidelines for the practice of behavior analysis.
